Choice Hotels You Will Never Get Tired Of

by Adriana Noton

Hotels are most often short term residences commonly incidental to travel for business or recreation. Early versions offered bare necessities, but those of today have most of the comforts of home. As a matter of fact there have been many guests that stayed for decades at a stretch.

The first hotels offered only a small room with bed, chair, table, small dresser, wash basin and pitcher. Baths, when they became available, may have been down the hall and shared with the other guests. The room was basically a place to sleep.

With the passage of time other amenities became available. New technological devices like a telephone, alarm clock, television, iron, coffee maker, hair dryer, air conditioner, and internet connection became available and were included as basic components. Luxury inns competed with their competitors by offering more.

Now they offer everything from gym equipment, spas, and swimming pools to child care, laundry, newspaper, and massage to beauty shops, meeting rooms, and live entertainment. Many include casinos. The Concierge is eager to assist with directions, advice, and arrangements.

If fact some people have extended their easygoing stays in their favorite resort or other lodgings for years. Everything you might enjoy at home can be made available at some inns, with a 24 hour staff included and with the freedom from chores and concerns like house cleaning, maintenance, and yard work. The purchase of all the equipment, tools, and supplies needed to operate a household becomes unnecessary. Things like cookware, linens, vacuums, are not needed. It may be unnecessary even to have a car.

These have been mostly people who have the means to pay for the convenience of having others waiting on them. Many have been actors who may have first become accustomed to this style of living while filming on location. Larry Fine of Three Stooges fame lived for years in hotels with his wife and raised his daughter there. British actor Richard Harris was a long term resident, Egyptian actor Ahmad Zaki lived his last 15 years there, and American actress Elaine Stritch lived for over a decade in one.

The novelist Vladimere Nabokov and his wife lived in one in Russia from 1961 until his death in 1977. The electrical inventor, Nicola Tesla resided there during the last decade of his life, and died there. Coco Chanel, the fashion designer resided there for more than three decades. General Douglas McArthur died there after a 14 year residence.

British entrepreneur Jack Lyons lived in one for several years. Eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes lived in them at various periods. He moved into one in 1948 and spent $11 million in a single year for lodging there with his entourage. He lived a recluse the last ten years of his life, until 1976, in various hotels located in Beverly Hills, Boston, Las Vegas, Vancouver, London, Bahamas, Nicaragua, and Mexico.

Hotels today offer amenities similar to what many people would want in their permanent home. They provide freedom from concerns about home maintenance or household chores. These people lived at these temporary residences for up to decades at a time.
