Mindil Beach Holiday
The Mindi Beach Thursday night markets is one of the primary 'must do's ' on the Darwin tourist scene. To make your campervan hire Australia a truly unique, head to the Top End of the Northerly Territory. Darwin locals have always had their Mindil Beach nightfall markets on Thursday nights during the dry season. It has always been the place to drop by after work on Thursdays, grab something delicious from one of the many food stalls and experience a drink while sitting on the grass looking out over the beach, watching the sun slowly set.
The tradition has since turned into one of the primary dry season events on the Darwin Tourist calendar. There are currently 200 craft stalls to read, illustrating domestically made arts and crafts and there are some fantastic buys available from local artists. There is also plenty of jewelry and clothing to choose between.
Darwin is a multicultural city within spitting distance to Asia so you can expect to find your food of choice at one of the 60 food stalls selling Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Chinese, Sri Lankan, Indian, Italian, Filipino and Malaysian to name only one or two.
Water, cola drinks and juice are sold but alcohol is BYO only. There's now a designated area with chairs and tables to sit and eat while the sun sets, however it is still possible to get a spot on the grass with your blanket and/or folding chair. As per current environmental practices, Mindil Beach sunset markets are now a smoke free area and plastic bags have recently been banned too.
So be sure to go to if you're in Darwin and create another memory of your holiday in Australia. Watching the sun go down over Mindil Beach, while enjoying a drink of wine, mouth watering Asian food and good company, is as good as it gets. If you find a bargain at one of the craft stalls, it is far better.
