NZ Visas

by Lauren Edwards

Many people really start to think about their future as they get older and one of the main questions that comes into their mind, is what to do when it comes to retirement. The outlook in England recently has been mainly doom and gloom, but this isn't the situation everywhere, particularly when you look at countries like Australia and New Zealand. Offering a warmer climate and a far easier, more laid back lifestyle, these countries have quickly become a popular choice for retirees, leading to an increase in applications for the New Zealand Retirement Visa.

In March last year the New Zealand Government introduced a Retirement Visa Scheme to allow potential retirees from the UK to travel and spend some of their retirement living in the country.

This system allows anyone over the age of 65 to travel to New Zealand and spend an extended period of time in the country without needing a job offer on arrival. It also requires that potential retirees have enough income to support their stay in New Zealand and make a substantial investment in the economy for the duration of their stay.

The New Zealand Visa categories are divided into two groups - the Temporary Retirement Visa and the Parent Retirement Visa. The Temporary Retirement Visa allows potential retirees to stay in New Zealand for up to two years providing they can provide that they have the wealth to cover the duration of their trip in addition to any medical or welfare expenses they may incur. They must be able to invest a minimum of NZD$750,000 in the Government for the duration of their stay and demonstrate an annual income of at least NZD$60,000.

The Parent Retirement Visa allows parents who have more than half of their family already living in New Zealand to be prioritised in their parent visa applications, providing they meet the Family Parent Visa criteria. This criteria includes having a child who is a New Zealand Permanent Resident or Citizen as well as being in good health and character. The must also invest NZD$1 million over the course of their four year stay.
