The Strange Exhibits Denver Puts On Display

by Marsha Silva

With all of the highly recommended museum and art gallery exhibits Denver has on display, it might be a good idea to have a look at some of the more off beat and unusual things. You only have a few days in the city, and you have decided that it would be a lot more fun to see the weird side of Colorado rather than the usual tourist stuff.

You first came up with the idea while you were collecting your luggage at the airport. You had heard about the bizarre and somewhat frightening set of murals in the airport here, but when you actually had a chance to see them up close you were speechless. If this was the kind of crazy thing they put in high traffic public facilities in this town, what on Earth would the stranger little museum have?

As it happened, you immediately realized that even the biggest and most mainstream galleries have weird things in them. Looking through a brochure for the main municipal art gallery you note that there is an installation of Italian Renaissance depictions of babies that looks quite strange and creepy in some ways. Not that odd looking children are unusual in Renaissance paintings, but there you have it.

More to your taste was the interactive and environmental installation on Curtis Street known as Soundwalk. This is an example of audio sculpture and involves the generation of strange and unusual sounds as pedestrians interact with the grates in the sidewalk.

A haunted tour of The Brown Palace sounds like fun. You love those old buildings with their creepy hallways and secret underground tunnels. There is a particularly spooky legend about room 904 and the death of a socialite who lived there for fifteen years which claims that the front desk still receives ghostly phone calls from that room to this day.

You have also decided that you are going to return to the airport a few hours before your flight home just so you can take a good look at those freaky murals. They were so aggressive, so huge and surreal that you felt somehow uncomfortable being close to them. Strange depictions of wild eyed horses and men in gas masks are only the tip of the iceberg.

Galleries and museums have lots of the exhibits Denver would like visitors to enjoy. For those who prefer strange and unique sights, however, it is often more profitable to look in odd little places for odd little things. Read more about: exhibits denver
