What a Holiday in Durban can Offer
Of all the South African province of Kwazulu-Natal, Durban is the largest city, as well as being the third largest in the whole of South Africa. It started small with just a few British people settling in 1823 and establishing a port. After much contest and bloodshed, however, it grew until it became the busiest port in the whole of Africa, and a bustling tourist spot. This is a look at what you can do on holiday in Durban.
Shopping is a good way to spend time in Durban, with large malls such as Warwick Mall, or the Pavilion offering nearly 300 different kinds of shops. If, however, you are looking for something a little more authentic, then there are plenty of weekend markets, or flea markets where you can buy handmade goods, flowers, leather and fresh fruit and vegetables. If you want something a little more high brow, however, then you can buy original art from the African Art Centre.
If you want to see some nature, then Crocworld is a great place to visit. It is home to over 10,000 crocodiles and over 200 different species of birds too. You can see the beautiful Fish Eagle, whose name is Isis, as well as the oldest and heaviest crocodile in captivity. Fish, snakes and flamingo's are also there to be seen along with a fresh water aquarium.
Another collection of rare natural beauty is the Durban Botanical Gardens which was started in 1849 for commercial crops, but soon became home to tropical plants too. There you can see plants of African, Asian and American origin and various kinds of orchids, palms and cycads. Why not spend an afternoon in this beautiful place and share a picnic with someone?
The beaches are also a popular sight in Durban. The most popular of the beaches is South Beach which has wonderful soft golden sand and warm waters. It can tend to get over crowded so make sure you get there early. Other good beaches include the North Beach and Addington Beach, all with similarly beautiful characteristics.
