What is the best place to experience the Riviera Maya

by Phillip Berth

The Riviera Maya is a popular tourist destination that stretches along the Caribbean coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Originally it ran from the city of Playa del Carmen down to the village of Tulum. But now towns situated north of Playa del Carmen are promoting themselves as located on the Riviera. This is because it is a desirable destination, so all the places near it compete for tourists to get more business out of it.

It is pretty obvious why this place is so popular with tourists. There are dazzling lengths of fine white sands, and beautifully clear turquoise waters, along with the odd mangrove swamp too. Out from the shore you will find a stunning coral reef, along with shipwrecks that are teeming with fascinating marine life. Each place along this region claim they offer the definitive experience of the Riviera Maya, so which one should you choose?

You can find two competing experiences here. On the one hand, though Playa del Carmen used to be a laid back town, it is now a place full of big resorts and glitzy hotels. On the other side of the spectrum we have sleepy fishing villages like Puerto Morelos.

If you are going to the Riviera to enjoy some scuba diving, then it is how you access the sea that will most concern you. There are conformable and modest fishing and scuba diving lodges you can stay in at Boca Paila and Xcalak peninsulas, which are supposed to be among the best places to get access to the reef. There are programs offered to tourists there to help out in the effort to say the sea turtles which are currently under threat by human development.

You can also see some ancient history inland in some places along the Riviera. The ruins found at Tulum for example, are a beautiful example of the incredible structures built by the Mayans. As you can see, where you should enjoy the Riviera Maya from depends on what you want to get out of your stay.
