Where to go for a UK Holiday

by Albert Thistlegown

Going on a great holiday doesn't mean going overseas. The UK has loads on offer, and without the costs of travel you'll find that it's a cheaper choice too. Where you head to really depends on what your tastes are: there's a huge range, from activity holidays in more windswept locations, to city breaks and retail therapy. Here are some of the places that draw people in for a bit of fun, rest and relaxation around the UK.

For coastal breaks it's easy to think that you have to head towards the classics, such as Brighton or Skegness, but though these are right up some people's street, they tend to seem a bit dated to young holiday goers. To make the most of the British coast it pays to go to places a bit more scenic and less developed. South Wales has some completely deserted stretches of beach where you can get close to seals and other wildlife, while Cornwall offers a good balance of facilities with beautiful scenery. For alternative coastal choices Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay offer really unique takes on the seaside tradition, with gothic features, ghostly tours and traditional architecture.

The Lake District is a firm favourite with people from all over the place, including A-list celebrities. Whatever walk of life you come from, it gives you the chance to get away from it all and travel back in time to quaint villages and stunning scenery. Once there you'll find it easy to relax and enjoy the clean air, but equally easy to get active with mountains all around and almost everywhere open to walkers.

City breaks are always an option too. The places that foreign tourists tend to flock too are London and Edinburgh. Both are certainly filled with things to see and do. If you want somewhere more compact, low rise and away from the crowds, York is a brilliant option, with one of the best medieval city centres in Europe.

There's so much more on offer, but these are few ideas to get you started on potential British breaks.
